ALBAWABA - Kholoud Ba Sharaheel, a Yemeni model, was arrested by authorities after she appeared in multiple photos without her headscarf (hijab) or Abaya.
According to two sources, who are close to the Yemeni model, Ba Sharaheel was detained by the police in Hadhramaut Governorate after she appeared in pictures without a head veil, not an Abaya (a long, loose-fitting, robelike garment that covers the entire body, except for the face, hands and feet).
Sources also revealed to Reuters that the Yemeni model and her husband were detained and then released after the photos were shared on social media.
No official statement was made by the Yemeni government, which controls Hadhramaut Governorate, however, reports confirmed that the Yemeni model was arrested on the second day of Eid Al-Adha.
Kholoud Ba Sharaheel has been making a wide buzz and sparking controversy after she announced removing her hijab and calling for more women's freedom in Yemen.

Nonetheless, Kholoud was not the only Yemeni model to be punished, Houthi militias also arrested Yemeni model Entesar Al-Hammadi. In 2021, a Houthi court sentenced Al-Hammadi, as well as three other women, to prison over accusations of committing "an indecent act," Human Rights Watch reported.
