ALBAWABA - A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) went viral after capturing a man burning the old Syrian Lira featuring the portrait of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syria’s transitional government has recently launched a new currency, replacing the old designs with new, vibrant ones featuring olives, oranges, roses, wheat, and other symbols.

Additionally, the new currency was unveiled to remove two zeros from the Syrian pound in an effort to simplify transactions and signal steps toward economic stabilization. The new Syrian pound is expected to hit the country at the start of the year on January 1, 2026.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s administration states that this marks a new step into Syria's future, including broader economic recovery, potential sanctions relief, and international reconstruction support.

The video in question received mixed reactions from social media, with many stating that the man should've preserved the currency as an antique instead of burning it.

A social media user wrote on X, "I would keep it as it is antique. Probably sell it for more than it is worth 50 years down the road."

On the contrary, another social media user praised the man and wrote, "On God, it's a nice trend... I liked it, and I want to film it this evening 😂 Wait for it on our Instagram."

The video was shared by Syrian journalist Qusay Noor, who wrote in the caption, "The disappearance of the last remnants of the former regime."
