ALBAWABA - A video has gone viral on social media platforms allegedly showing the first moment of the military coup in Gabon shortly after the announcement of election results on Wednesday.
In the unconfirmed video, dozens of people were seen clapping in the street and cheering up military members who were riding a vehicle through the city. Demonstrators were also caught carrying Gabon flags.
Ali Bongo, who is a Gabonese politician and was the third president of Gabon from 2009 to 2023, was recently reelected with 64.27 percent of the vote, the Gabonese Election Centre (CGE) said on Wednesday.
According to local media, Gabon coup leaders have placed ousted president Ali Bongo under house arrest and detained his son following their announcement of seizing power in the country.
The unverified video has gained massive interaction on social media with people allegedly saying that people in Gabon are very happy to get rid of Ali Bongo.
An X user said: "Bongo had shut down the internet to block out reports of election fraud. So after it nullified the election, the military immediately restored the internet, so the world can see this. Power is in the hands of the people."
Another added: "When you have the citizenship in support of a coup, you know the government fucked it all up."
