ALBAWABA - The Pentagon announced that it will send weapons and rounds of ammunition seized from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to Ukraine to fight Russia, CNN reported exclusively.
The IRGC weapons and ammunition were likely to be on their way to Yemen to support Houthi fighters which is considered a violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 before being seized by U.S. Central Command naval forces.
"These munitions were originally seized by U.S. Central Command naval forces from the transiting stateless dhow MARWAN 1, Dec. 9, 2022," according to a U.S. Central Command statement.
According to a report by CNN, Ukraine is currently facing a shortage in weapons and arms after over a year of fighting the Russian invasion that started on Feb. 24, 2022.
Poland announced in late September that it is suspending weapons supply to Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said.
The minister defended the decision saying that this comes as Poland is moving towards bolstering its national security, temporarily diverting resources from international aid to meet domestic defense needs.
Furthermore, the U.S. had earlier transferred over 1 million rounds of seized Iranian ammunition to the Ukrainian armed forces and it is planning to send more weapons, the statement continued.
"The government obtained ownership of these munitions on July 20, 2023, through the Department of Justice’s civil forfeiture claims against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," the statement reads.
