Truth behind picture of Bashar Assad and wife in Moscow

ALBAWABA - Amid the collapse of the Syrian regime under former president Bashar Assad, a picture of Assad and his wife Asma reportedly spotted in Moscow went viral across social after news circulated that he fled Damascus to Russia.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Russia's President Vladimir Putin agreed to grant Bashar Assad and his family including his children and wife safety in Moscow, after the opposition army led by commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani took over Syria.

Despite rumors that the picture in question is recent and was taken in Moscow, it was shot back in Aleppo on Feb. 10, 2023, right after Syria suffered one of its most devastating earthquake incidents in recent times.  

The picture which was taken as a screenshot from a 2023 video clip showcased Assad and his wife on their way to visit wounded citizens amid the earthquake that also hit Turkey. 

On November 8, the Military Operations Department in Syria announced the fall of the regime of former President Bashar Assad after a revolution that broke out in 2011.

Moreover, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali called on all Syrians today to preserve the state's public property saying it belongs to all Syrians.
