ALBAWABA - Syrian famous basketball player Ghaith Al-Shami was killed along with two family members in the Ashrafiyeh neighborhood in Aleppo, local media reported.
Local sources confirmed that the bodies of the victims; Ghaith Al-Shami, his mother and sister, were found nearly 24 hours after the crime in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
Ghaith Al-Shami, 17 years old, who is a player in the Syrian National Basketball Team and Al-Hurriya Club, was killed, in addition to his mother, Jumana, and his sister, Ghazal, 18.
The Syrian Arab Basketball Federation mourned the death of the Syrian basketball player without providing any additional details about the circumstances of the incident. No official source in Syria revealed the reason behind the horrific crime which increased the mystery surrounding the crime and its motives.
On the other hand, the director of the Forensic Medicine Center in Aleppo, Abdul Rahman Shahada, reported last Saturday that the cause of death was due to bleeding resulting from multiple stab wounds with a sharp object, adding that "each body was subjected to more than four stab wounds."
People in Syria are now sharing the hashtag "#غيث_الشامي" (Ghaith Al-Shami) calling people to make it a public opinion issue.
An activist slammed the horrific crime on X and wrote: "The murder of the young basketball player of the Al-Hurriya Club in Aleppo, Ghaith Al-Shami, along with his mother and sister, is another reflection of the social savagery that has prevailed since the beginning of the war.
The harshest punishment is required not only as a deterrent but also to restore some reassurance to the economically and psychologically stricken society."
