ALBAWABA In the aftermath of the earthquake in Morocco, social media users  shared a video that seemingly presented  evidence of the seismic event. The footage, which initially displayed serene scenes from space, gradually transformed into a chaotic display of static and interference.

The accompanying claim was bold: that this video was a real-time recording of the Morocco earthquake as seen from satellites in orbit.

Upon closer inspection and scrutiny, it became evident that this claim was far from accurate. In fact, the video in question had been uploaded to YouTube several months prior to the earthquake.

The video's publishers had asserted that "Satellites documented the Morocco earthquake as it happened," but this statement was unequivocally false.

It was disclosed that the video was compiled from a series of images captured by NASA in 2021 and was manipulated using "time-lapse" technology.

The video went viral, amassing thousands of shares on various social media platforms in the days following the earthquake that struck on Friday night and Saturday.

This seismic event registered a magnitude of 7 as reported by the Moroccan Center for Scientific and Technical Research (or 6.8 according to the United States Geological Survey), marking it as the strongest tremor ever documented in Morocco.
