ALBAWABA - A shock was caused after a gang rape of a female university student inside her family's home in a neighborhood of the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott.

In detail, the gang rape crime took place when thieves broke into a home last Friday night, where the girl was sleeping with her father who suffers from a nervous illness.

A statement released by the family confirmed that the attackers assaulted and gang-raped the university student, threatening her with a knife.

Mass protests erupted in Mauritania as demonstrators called for harsh and strict penalties for the perpetrators of the crime, improving legislation related to combating sexual crimes, and confronting impunity.

Following this incident, simultaneous demonstrations took place in several Mauritanian cities on Monday to denounce this horrific rape, in which slogans were raised demanding the harshest punishments for the perpetrators.

Several human rights organizations also decried the horrible crime, despite the police announcing the arrest of the perpetrators and referring them for investigation.
