ALBAWABA - Salwan Momika, the Iraqi refugee who burnt the holy Quran several times, was reportedly shot dead in Hovsjö in Södertälje in Sweden on Wednesday, local reports confirmed.

Momika was first noticed when he first burnt the Quran and then repeated his act several times. He was widely criticized and received many death threats.

According to data from the Swedish website SVT Nyheter, the Iraqi man was killed inside his apartment in Sodertalje city in Sweden during a live TikTok video.

According to the local media, Swedish police received a call and arrived at the shooting location on Wednesday at around 11 p.m. (local time). One suspect was arrested.

Nonetheless, The Stockholm District Court postponed today's verdict in a trial in which Momika was a defendant because one of the defendants had died, confirming the killing of the Quran burner.

Judge Göran Lundahl uncovered that the deceased was Momika but added no information about when and how he died.

Despite reports on social media, there is no official confirmation yet by the police about the shooting attack or whether Salwan Momika, 38, was the one who was killed or not.

A video was posted on X allegedly showing the moment when Salwan Momika was shot dead while he was on a live TikTok video.

Who is Salwan Momika?

Salwan Momika first arrived in Sweden from Iraq in 2018 where he gained a three-year residence permit in 2021.

The Iraqi refugee became recognized to the public in the summer of 2023 when, on several occasions, he burned copies of the holy Quran in public places in protest against Islam. His action was condemned globally and triggered anger in many Muslim countries who protested against his actions.
