On Sunday, Oct. 19, a gang of four stole $102 million worth of jewelry from the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and escaped. The French police are still investigating the incident, as the robbers are still on the run as of today, Oct. 23.
The police said that the crown of Empress Eugénie (gold, emeralds & diamonds) was dropped outside the museum during the thieves' escape and later recovered in a damaged state.
French culture minister Rachida Dati confirmed the robbery by saying, "I am on site alongside the museum teams and the police. Investigations are underway." She added, "No injuries to report."
Thieves used power tools to climb the building before breaking windows into the world's most visited museum in broad daylight, and looting jewelery.
The robbery took place between 09:30 and 09:40 local time, according to the French police, who rapidly responded to the heist and are now looking for the thieves.
The stolen jewels have been added to INTERPOL’s Stolen Works of Art database, which combines descriptions and pictures of more than 57,000 items from around the world.
