ALBAWABA - A video went viral on social media showing French President Emmanuel Macron being smacked in the face by his wife Brigitte Macron just before going down from the plane as they arrived in Vietnam.

Footage showed the plane door opening as the French president and his wife arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam. Out of the sudden, France's first lady Brigitte Macron appeared to push her husband away with both hands, causing a wave of mockery online.

Initially, the Elysee claimed that the video was edited and is fake, but contacted by French public radio, Franceinfo, confirmed the video's authenticity.

Macron played down the video, which caused widespread controversy online, by telling reporters that they were joking together, the Associated Press reported.

"We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife," Macron said, adding, "It becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe."

Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron got married in 2007 after they met at the high school where he was a student and she was his teacher.
