The Lincoln Project: What Is the Real Motive Behind the Republicans Against Trump?

Shortly before the start of this election year, the Lincoln Project was launched in the US by a number of long-time republican politicians aiming to "prevent the re-elections of President Donald Trump." But what is the real motive behind this group?

Founded by George Conway, husband of Trump's former advisor Kellyanne Conway, who continues to support the president, in addition to Steve Schmidt, John Weaver, Rick Wilson, and a number of other GOP politicians, the Lincoln Project has been heavily attacking Donald Trump and his supporters, especially GOP senates and representatives who support the President. 

The Project has been named after the 16th US President Abraham Lincoln, the symbol of Republican pride associated with abolishing slavery and leading the federal government to win the Civil War.

According to co-founders, the Lincoln Project aims to defeat Trump by addressing his Republican fan base in order to "protect the institutions that have made the United States the greatest nation the world has ever known."

On their website, the Lincoln Project highlights that their goal is to "defeat President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box," pointing at their peaceful approach to "protect the US democracy," which is why they named their project after Lincoln.

Last April, the anti-Trump Republican organization announced its endorsement of the Democratic candidate Joe Biden, saying that their "many policy differences with national Democrats remain. However, the priority for all patriotic Americans must be a shared fidelity to the Constitution and a commitment to defeat those candidates who have abandoned their constitutional oaths, regardless of party. Electing Democrats who support the Constitution over Republicans who do not is a worthy effort."

During the third quarter of 2020, Axios has reported that the Lincoln Project had raised near $40 million, in reference to their growing popularity.

Responding to claims made by the Lincoln Project against Trump's policies, the President had attacked them saying that they should call it "the losers project," adding that they "attack him to make up for their political failures over the last several years."

The Lincoln Project is not the only GOP voice against President Donald Trump. Over the last four years, many prominent republicans had attacked Trump on different occasions, including the late John McCain and Mitt Romney, both Senators who ran against the 44th president Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 elections.

Additionally, the former governor of Ohio John Kasich has made a video appearance to endorse the DNC candidate during the 2020 Democratic convention held last August, which officially announced Joe Biden as the party's candidate for the presidency.
