ALBAWABA - Lebanese authorities arrested theatrical comedian Nour Hajjar and then released him after several hours over a joke he made on stage.
In detail, Public Prosecutor of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oueidat, ordered the arrest of Hajjar over a lawsuit filed against him by Dar Al-Fatwa, after accusing him of using a "Quranic verse" in a comic scene.
According to the lawyer of Nour, the lawsuit was issued against a very old show presented by the Lebanese comedian. Diala Shehadeh said the show "dates back to around 2018 and the line was taken from a 20-minute show."
She further supported the comedian saying that the joke was not meant to be offensive to any religion.
Nevertheless, this is not the only case against the comedian as reported last week Nour Hajjar was questioned over a comedy show about the Lebanese army.
Many people protested in front of the court calling for the immediate release of the Lebanese comedian and they chanted slogans including: "Nour is inside while Riad is out" in a rally against the unarrest of the Former Governor of the Bank of Lebanon Riad Salameh.
Riad Salameh is blamed for a crisis that has seen soaring Lebanese inflation and the currency lose 98 percent of its value.
Social media users shared the alleged joke over which the Lebanese comedian was arrested as some people defended Hajjar and slammed the authorities' decision to arrest him as a way to suppress freedom of expression.
On the other hand, Sheikh Hassan Moraib appeared on video hailing the arrest of a Lebanese comedian since he made a joke about something that he shouldn't. He also called people who are defending him of fakely trying to look "open-minded".
