ALBAWABA - Mohammed Shaalan, a former Palestinian basketball player, was killed on Tuesday by Israeli gunfire while seeking food for his daughter in Khan Younis, Gaza.

The 40-year-old was considered one of the most prominent athletes in the Palestinian national basketball team before his retirement. State news agency Wafa confirmed Shaalan's death, as human rights activists took to social media demanding a ceasefire.

According to Anadolu Agency, more than 800 Palestinian athletes have been killed in Gaza due to the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, as reported by local officials.

Israel also recently sparked outrage after killing Suleiman al-Obeid, a football player nicknamed "Palestinian Pelé," while he was awaiting humanitarian aid near a distribution point.

The ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza has resulted in the killing of at least 62,000 Palestinians and the injuring of more than 152,000. Additionally, the ongoing famine in Gaza took the lives of 263 Palestinians, including 112 children.
