ALBAWABA - A video from Syria has dominated social media after a former prisoner at Sednaya Prison confronted his jailer, who tortured him for years.
Sednaya Prison, which is known as the "Human Slaughterhouse", is located near Damascus in Syria, and it is infamous for its brutality and secrecy. According to a 2017 report by the human rights organization, Amnesty International, between 2011–2015 alone, about 13,000 prisoners were hanged in secret.
In the video, a former Sednaya prisoner was seen sitting topless with torture scars all over his body while talking to another man, who is currently in jail, and confronting him about the methods they used to "enjoy" while torturing prisoners.
The Syrian man was heard telling the other person, "Do you remember what tool you used to hit me?" The other man responds: "Using baton [a large or thick stick used as a weapon, often with a pointed head, also referring to a type of legal stick used by police to disperse protesters]".
The former prisoner continued, "In addition to a flat-headed iron stick with spikes on top, so when you hit it reaches the bones of the human body."
During the Syrian uprising and civil war that continued for over 10 years, many political prisoners were arrested; however, when the former Syrian regime, led by Bashar Assad, collapsed on Dec. 8, 2024, all prisons in Syria were opened, and prisoners were freed.
