ALBAWABA - Mixed reactions have been flooding on social media after Egypt's decision to ban Niqab in schools.
Yesterday, the Egyptian Ministry of Education announced banning female students from wearing Niqab to school driving massive discussions online as some people defended the decisions while others slammed the new regulation.
A netizen wrote: "This means tightening the freedom of people. What if a girl is already wearing Niqab then she'll have to remove it for school and this is just not right."
Another said: "Now they ban Niqab in schools, after that we should expect anything else." Moreover, a person said: "Niqab ban! Is this Egypt or France?"
Meanwhile, the Niqab ban decision was also met by some people with positive reactions from people who defended it saying that this new regulation may take Egypt back to old, precious times.
The new decision comes amid the new united uniform rules in public and private schools for the new academic year 2023/2024 which were imposed by the Egyptian Minister of Education, Reda Hegazy.
On the other hand, the minister did not directly say anything about Hijabs, but he noted that "hair covering for girls is not compulsory but rather optional, and it is stipulated that the covering that the student chooses of her own will does not obscure her face."
The Ministry of Education further mentioned if the female student wears the hijab, her parents must be aware of their daughter’s choice, and that it "was made based on her desire without pressure or coercion from any person or entity other than the guardian."
