The Los Angeles Dodgers have terminated the contract of Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, following allegations of a significant financial theft.
The controversy surfaced after an investigation revealed suspicious wire transfers amounting to at least $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to what is believed to be a bookmaking operation.
Mizuhara, who has been Ohtani’s interpreter since his MLB debut, is accused of funneling the MLB star’s funds for gambling purposes. The allegations have cast a shadow over Ohtani’s recent record 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers organization acted swiftly upon learning of the allegations, emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy for such behavior. The case has been turned over to the authorities for further investigation.
The interpreter’s actions have not only breached trust but also potentially tarnished the reputation of one of baseball’s most celebrated athletes.
Shohei Ohtani, known for his dual prowess as a pitcher and hitter, has yet to comment on the situation. His focus remains on the upcoming season, where he is expected to continue his groundbreaking performance in Major League Baseball.
