ALBAWABA - A new photo circulating on social media of a Temu warehouse catching fire went viral sparking debate and speculations about the authenticity of the incident in question.
On December 29, a user on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote, "A 57,000-square-foot Temu warehouse in China went up in flames today" following a picture of the warehouse, and added, "The total loss of inventory has been estimated to be as high as $56.19."
Did the 57,000-square-foot Temu warehouse in China catch fire?
Fact-checking website Snopes concluded that the image in question was AI-generated using Grok because it had a watermark of X's AI companion on it. Moreover, the Temu logo looked inauthentic compared to its official lettering and icons.
The investigation also included researching about the incident on Google which showcased no results of a recent Temu warehouse catching fire from official news sources. Snopes couldn't identify the user who first shared the AI-generated image.
AI is only becoming better when it comes to generating images, to the point that in some cases a non-trained eye could easily fall for its authenticity, leading to false news and other legal issues. Furthermore, it's taking over at a rapid pace across social media causing copyright and authenticity issues among artists, musicians, and other individuals in the creative field.
