ALBAWABA - The Israeli army announced earlier this month that it is preparing for a ground invasion in southern Lebanon amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah, but did the operation start today?

Social media users have been circulating the alleged news that the Israeli army has launched its planned ground operation in Lebanon without any previous warning or announcement.

A person wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "BREAKING: Israel has boots on the ground in Lebanon. Invasion has started."

Another added: "The small incursions of IDF troops and armor into South Lebanon is “clearing the ground” for a larger thrust. We saw this in Gaza before the major ground invasion. I don’t know if Israel has made THE decision for a larger operation but we are very close."

Did Israel really start a ground invasion in Lebanon?

The report was first made by the American newspaper ABC News which quoted two US officials, who said that small-scale operations or "border movements" into Beirut to defeat Hezbollah sites along the border have either started or are imminent.

Despite the allegation being spread widely online that a ground invasion may have started, Israel hasn't yet taken the final decision, the American officials added.

On Friday, harsh airstrikes were carried out by Israel targeting Hezbollah headquarters after news that the leader of the movement Hassan Nasrallah was there. On Saturday, both the Israeli army and Hezbollah announced the death of Nasrallah in the strike on Beirut's southern suburb hitting six buildings altogether.
