ALBAWABA - Activists said that Syrian cartoonist Ahmad Jalal was arrested while at work in Azaz City in northwest Syria, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) reported.
According to SNHR, Ahmad Jalal was arrested by the military police of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army from his workplace at the Free Aleppo University.
The military force took the Syrian anti-regime cartoonist to an unknown destination amid calls for his release by activists and human rights organizations.
SNHR added that the reason behind the cartoonist's arrest was under the pretext of sheltering a civilian in his home with the intention of heading to the Syrian-Turkish border to cross into Turkey illegally.
However, Ahmad's detention took place without any judicial warrant being issued, and he was taken to the Central Military Police Department of the National Army in the town of Kafr Janna, near Azaz City.
Ahmad Jalal was known for his satirical and humanitarian political cartoons when he lived in the city of Kafra Nabel. He then moved to live in Azaz because he was targeted by Tahrir al-Sham due to his drawings criticizing the policy of the group.
Activists are now afraid that the National Army would hand him over to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, SNHR further added in the report on Tuesday.
