ALBAWABA - Questions were raised on social media speculating about the fate of Maher Assad, brother of Syrian President Bashar Assad and the leader of Syria's Fourth Armoured Division, following a strike that targeted his villa in Damascus.
The Fourth Armoured Division, led by Masher Assad, is an elite formation of the Syrian Army whose primary purpose is to defend the Syrian government from any threats.
Yesterday, an Israeli drone attacked a villa of the Fourth Division, near the town of Yafour in the Rif Dimashq countryside, with highly explosive missiles, on Sunday evening.
According to The Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (SOHR) sources, the villa was frequented by leaders of Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Was Maher Assad harmed in the airstrike on Rif Dimashq?
Following the drone attack news, many activists took to social media to speculate the fate of Maher Assad, brother of Bashar, and whether he was harmed, injured or killed in the strike.
Firstly, many users claimed that their connection with Maher Assad was cut and no one was able to reach the Syrian military officer and commander.
Meanwhile, some opponents took the chance and claimed that Maher Assad, who is the head of Syria's Fourth Armoured Division, was "killed" in the drone attack. A photo of the obituary of Maher Assad was also viral on social media as many allegedly said that official sources released it.
However, SOHR reported yesterday that there was no information about any human casualties in the attack. Earlier, it further noted citing credible sources that Maher Assas received warning messages not to transfer weapons and arms from Syria to Lebanon.
Sources denied the news that Maher Assad was injured in the Yaafour town attack, confirming that he was not present in the villa at the time of the attack, as he was outside Damascus.
This is not the first time, people have claimed that Maher Assad was either killed or injured in an attack, earlier dozens of rumors always surround the brother of the Syrian President.
