For the first time since Parliament authorized airstrikes against Islamic State militants, two RAF jets flew combat missions over Iraq.

Parliament gave the go-ahead for airstrikes against IS-- also known as ISIS or ISIL -- in Iraq but not in Syria on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Defense the two Tornado jets carried out armed reconnaissance missions but did not conduct airstrikes.

In a statement the MOD said, "Although on this occasion no targets were identified as requiring immediate air attack by our aircraft, the intelligence gathered by the Tornados' highly sophisticated surveillance equipment will be invaluable to the Iraqi authorities and their coalition partners."

RAF Tornadoes have been flying reconnaissance missions over Iraq for the last six weeks -- but these are the first flights since they were authorized for airstrikes.

The jets were equipped with laser-guided bombs and missiles.
