The police chief in Libya’s Tripoli has been assassinated, AFP reports. Col. Mohammad al-Suissi was gunned down in the eastern suburbs of Tripoli Tuesday. No group has claimed responsibility.
“Col. Suissi was assassinated by a group of unknown hooded, armed people. Two men wither him were kidnapped in the attack,” said an unnamed source.
Since the overthrow of long-time dictator Moammar Gaddafi in 2011, armed militias have refused to give up their weapons and have wreaked havoc on the North African country. The security situation in Libya continues to deteriorate as the government struggles to consolidate power.
