A Turkish court has ordered the arrest of four former Israeli military chiefs who were involved in a maritime assault in 2010, AFP reports.
In May of 2010, Israeli commandos boarded a Turkish ship filled with activists who sought to break the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip. After the raid, nine activists were left dead, according to AFP.
Turkish prosecutors are seeking life sentences for the commanders and will ask Interpol to issue international arrest warrants for the men.
The assault sparked outrage worldwide and hugely damaged the relationship between Turkey and Israel.
Israel issued a formal apology but human rights groups still want the Israeli soldiers involved to be put on trial.
“We will not drop the lawsuits. We believe criminals must be put on trial. Even if we do give up, victims’ families will not,” said a spokesman for the Humanitarian Relief Foundation.
