Students, faculty and staff at Zayed University on Wedneday marked the 30th anniversary of UAE National Day by casting light on the country’s rich heritage, the Gulf News reported Thursday.

Participants from both campuses, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, celebrated the rapid development of the country under the wise leadership of President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Susan Hunwicks, coordinator of National Day activities at the university, was quoted by the Dubai-based paper as saying that the joint celebrations allowed the community to take part together in honoring the rich cultural heritage and progress of the emirates.

Those attending enjoyed an iftar, or Ramadan fast-breaking meal, followed by an evening of cultural and educational festivities. Both campuses displayed the cultural heritage of the UAE by hosting the Ramadan Village, according to the paper.

In the Ramadan Village, students displayed traditional arts of bread making, oyster opening and kilim weaving. They also distributed Arabic sweets and displayed the art of using henna, traditional dye.
