At least 42 people were killed and 37 wounded in a suicide bombing Saturday night in southern Yemen, according to a new toll released by hospital and local government sources. The previous toll declared by the governor of Abyan province spoke about 20 dead.

The attack, claimed by al-Qaeda, was carried out during a mourning ceremony for a member in a tribial militia related to the Yemeni army in Jaar. The target was apparently the commander of the Popular Committees, who supported the Yemeni army offensive against the Islamist militants of Ansar al-Sharia, linked to Al Qaeda, in June in the province of Abyan. This offensive was described by the government as a major victory.

The commander Abdul Latif al-Sayed, was wounded and hospitalized. Two of his brothers died.
