The Yemeni army killed seven Shiite rebels and injured an eighth as its offensive in the northern mountains entered a second month, a commander said on Sunday. Government forces killed the rebel fighters on Saturday as they attempted to reopen key routes in Saada province on the Saudi border, the official Saba news agency quoted the commander as saying.

In neighbouring Jawf province, troops captured three rebels, a security official said, according to AFP.

On Saturday, a source in the Yemeni Supreme Security Commission said the army inflicted heavy losses to the rebellion elements and destroyed several hideouts in many regions. According to SABA, the army units "destroyed a number of rebels' weapons" and arrested tens of those "terrorist" elements after forcing them to surrender.
