Twelve people were killed Sunday in attempted car bomb attempts in Yemen, AFP reports. Two soldiers and 10 jihadists died when al-Qaeda militants attacked three army posts in the province of Abyan. Two car bombs exploded before reaching their targets, while a third went off at the gate of a base, said a military official.

“The alertness of the soldiers foiled the militants’ attempt to seize the military post,” reports AFP.

A gunfight followed the bombing attempts, killing seven of the assailants.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is active across Yemen and is considered by many analysts to be the most deadly branch of al-Qaeda. AQAP militants have carried out multiple attacks in Yemen.
