Fighters supporting Yemen's exiled government and the Saudi-led coalition have taken control of the strategic city of Zinjibar on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The city marks another major blow to Shiite Houthi rebels, who have lost control of key areas in southern Yemen including the port city of Aden

Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, is on the Arabian Sea and became a focus for forces supporting the government. UAE state news agency WAM reported three Emirati soldiers were killed in the fighting.

Saudi Arabia and its allies began conducting airstrikes against the Iranian-backed rebels in late March after the Houthis took control of Aden.
