The 6-year, $28 million development of the Yarmouk River basin is scheduled to begin in March.
According to the Jordan Times, the project is designed to increase food production and income for farmers as well as modernize land-use methods and improve soil conditions. The project is anticipated to improve conditions for at least 3,000 families, and to create job opportunities for engineers, technicians, accountants as well as unskilled laborers.
Fathi Taifur, director of the Agriculture Department in Irbid Governorate, said that this among the department's most important projects ever. Financing is coming from loans from the World Bank, the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Jordanian government
