Work is underway to set up the Bahrain Womens Union, with the aim of pressing for women's rights and pushing for new legislation to deal with various related issues, reported the Gulf Daily News on Tuesday.

More than 200 women met at the Bahraini Young Ladies Association in Manama in April to discuss the plan.

A preparatory committee to draft the union's goals and rules has since been formed and is meeting once a month to ensure that all is in place before an application to form the union is presented to the labor and social affairs ministry for approval, the paper said.

This main committee is divided into three subcommittees: one to draft the society’s rules and regulations, a data collection committee, and a media committee, association president Mariam Rowaei told the paper.

“Each committee is responsible for a mission. The first is tasked with drafting the rules and regulations for the union and preparing the proposal, which will be submitted to the labor ministry for final approval,” she said.

This union is not designed specifically for working women, nor is it for housewives, but rather seeks the improvement of the condition of women in general, she said – Albawaba.com
