AFP reports that a Saudi woman won a seat on the municipal council of Madrakah in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
This is the first election in Saudi Arabia in which women could vote and run as candidates.
Salma bint Hizab al-Oteibi will be the first Saudi woman to hold a municipal council position in Saudi Arabia, according to the official SPA news agency.
Reuters further reports that over 900 women ran for spots of 284 municipal councils. Over 6,400 people total ran for spots in the municipal elections.
It is illegal for women to drive in Saudi Arabia, and female campaigners were not allowed to meet with male votes directly. Popular personal-taxi service Uber offered free rides to women going to polling locations on Saturday to encourage female voter turnout.
