A woman, aged 24, was found alive in the rubbles of an apartment building in Turkey Monday, a week after the structure collapsed, a rescue official said. At least 83 people died in the tragedy.
Rescue workers were trying to free Yasemin Yaprakci from the rubbles early Monday, a rescue official said. On Sunday, crews pulled a 16-year-old boy from the debris.
"Her feet are trapped under the legs of at least one or two bodies," Serdar Demirel, a rescue official, told private NTV television. "She is very exhausted. She does not look bad but we don't know what will happen after we save her."
Relief workers found Yaprakci somewhere close to the entrance of the building, where rescue officials estimate more than a dozen bodies, killed as they tried to escape, were buried.
"We had detected her alive with electronic devices and sniffer dogs, as we searched for her, we heard her saying 'water, water'," Demirel said. "We're giving oxygen to her right now, she has been surrounded with the scent of bodies for days."
The rescue workers dug out eight more bodies overnight, increasing the death toll to at least 83, NTV television said. (Albawaba.com)
