Winter sports lovers will be delighted to know the latest addition to Garmisch-Partenkirchen’ landscape; the new Hausberg Cable Car will start its engine for the beginning of the 2006/2007 winter season. From the lower station at the parking area, it only takes 7 minutes to reach the heart of the "Classic" terrain at 1340 meters elevation.
The first official event of the winter season will take place, however, up on the Zugspitze. From the 17-19 of November, the party rocks at an elevation of almost 3000. For all the fun, sun and snow-joy all weekend long, safety is nevertheless the main focus of "SchneeSTART" both on and next to the slopes.
Christmas in the mountains is the highlight of the year for many guests, especially if they have the opportunity to enjoy the rich cultural tradition practiced in the area. The market community Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers many opportunities to do just that – warm up with a mug of spiced cider while taking in the Christmas market booths offering regional wares or visit the traditional nativity play accompanied by Bavarian folk music. Don’t miss a trip to the museum where the exhibition of hand-carved nativity scenes resounds with Christmas spirit. In addition, over 400 stores, shops and boutiques in the pedestrian zone of Garmisch and the historic Ludwigstrasse invite Christmas shoppers to take a peek inside.
Throughout the Winter Sport and Culture Weeks from December 23 to January 14, Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers a proud number of concerts and events. Among these, the celebrated boys’ choir, the Tölzer Knabenchor, will guest star in the town’s Convention Center on December 29. For those who prefer to get their exercise on the dance floor instead of (or in addition to!) the ski-slopes, the New Year’s Eve Ball in the Bayernhalle is just the place. The next day, the Glenn Miller Gala starts the New Year off with swing!
Winter in Garmisch-Partenkirchen - that also means high-class sporting events. One competition after the other marks the calendar in an amazing list of happenings. The Four Hills Tournament, the traditional New Year’s Ski Jump will take place on the first of the year for the 55th time. Sports lovers, world-class athletes, journalist and the curious all mix and mingle at the Olympic Stadium, experiencing the scene live in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The Bob-Sledding Race on January 6 is carried out with perhaps more humor, but no less excitement. This event has become a fixed date on the traditional calendar; rustic bob-sleds shoot down the track at up to 100 kilometers per hour. Men and women with strong bodies and dare-devil hearts guide their runners to the cheers of spectators traveling from all over Germany to witness the event
World class alpine-ski athletes battle over fractions of seconds on February 24 and 25, for then the International World Cup takes over Garmisch-Partenkirchen. During this highly anticipated racing weekend, the Men’s Downhill race will take place on the famous Kandahar slope and the Slalom will be carried out on Gudiberg Mountain.
