ALABWABA - After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's January bid to resign after nine years in office, Canada's Liberal Party will vote for a new leader to replace him on Sunday, AFP reported.
The country's Liberal Party is expected to choose a former central banker and political novice to lead the government and take the office after Justin Trudeau amid the economic tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Sources confirmed that 400,000 party members will be voting on Sunday to pick a new Liberal leader and the result will also be announced later today.
Who Are Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland?
Two people are dubbed as top candidates to replace the Canadian Prime Minister, they are Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney.
Mark Carney, a Canadian economist and politician, served earlier as the governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
Carney reminded voters that he led the Bank of Canada through the 2008-2009 financial crisis and directed the Bank of England during its turbulence that followed the 2016 Brexit vote in order to gain their votes.
Meanwhile, Chrystia Freeland is a former deputy prime minister who worked for Justin Trudeau. She was also a senior official with various jobs in the Liberal government that was first elected in 2015.
