The United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) Executive Director, James T. Morris will speak at the League of Arab States on Monday, 4 September, during the opening session of the 78th of the Economic and Social Council in Cairo.

Mr. Morris will speak about WFP’s operations in LAS member countries where it provides food assistance to vulnerable people particularly those affected by conflict, drought and other natural disasters. He will address, in particular, operations in Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and Sudan.

In 2004, WFP and the League signed their first Memorandum of Understanding for future cooperation. The agreement underlined the common interests of the two organisations. In addition to exchanging information and expertise in different fields, both agencies are working to identify problems and coordinate intervention relating to food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly among women and children.

Mr. Morris will head to Lebanon the following day to have a hands-on picture of the humanitarian situation there.
