A Palestinian fighter was shot dead by Israeli forces near the town of Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Sunday night. Palestinian residents and hospital officials on Monday identified the dead man as a member of the Islamic Jihad and said he had been on Israel's wanted list.

According to Reuters, the Israeli army said the man died after an undercover unit operating near Jenin came under fire from a car in which four Palestinians were travelling. The three other men were arrested and the Israeli troops seized weapons and munitions, a military spokeswoman said.

Earlier Sunday, Palestinian gunners fired five Qassam rockets at the western Negev causing damage to a construction site near the town Sderot. The Islamic Jihad posted a statement on a website claiming responsibility for firing rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel.
