Welcare Hospital, Dubai’s premier multi-specialty, critical care private hospital, provided medical care during the recent Dubai Rugby Sevens to a record 1,435 professional and amateur athletes. This means nearly three-quarters of all participating athletes passed through Welcare’s caring hands.
Welcare positioned 13 doctors, 35 nursing staff and 12 physiotherapists at the three-day event to treat this record number of patients afflicted with a combined total of more than 1,695 injuries ranging from contusions, soft tissue injuries and dislocations to bone fractures, torn hamstrings and lacerations. As well, 19 patients were referred to Welcare Hospital for follow-up and treatment for the more serious injuries.
“As in previous years, we will analyze the data on injuries and treatments to help us not only continue improving our care at the Dubai Rugby Sevens in the future but also enhance the treatment and therapy options we offer in our Sports Medicine Department,” said Michael Stroud, CEO of Welcare Hospital.
The combined data also will provide insights into how athletes, particularly amateurs, can better train ahead of the games to avoid injury.
Dr. George John, Specialist in the Sports Medicine Department at Welcare Hospital and Consultant and Chief Medical Officer at the Rugby Sevens, said of this year’s event, “Our team performed quickly, courteously and professionally with each athlete they treated, working to get those whose injuries were not too severe back on the field as soon as possible and those who were more seriously injured on the road to recovery,” said
More than 2,500 athletes representing 162 teams competed at this year’s Rugby Sevens, the opening round of the IRB Sevens World Series.
