A wall around a construction site in China's western city of Urumqi collapsed on Saturday, killing 12 people and injuring more than 30 gathered for a morning market, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The temporary, 130 foot brick wall collapsed after construction workers piled earth and building materials on the inside, the report said.

Police had arrested those people responsible for the accident, it said, but did not give details.

The open-air market, which sold vegetables and other products, was crowded with vendors and customers along Heilongjiang road, a major thoroughfare, the report said.

The city is the provincial capital of the region of Xinjiang, home to many of China's ethnic minority Uighur people -- BEIJING (Reuters)
