Several thousand supporters of Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid headed toward parliament on Wednesday where MPs earlier called for the Muslim cleric to face an impeachment hearing over his erratic rule.

Witnesses said some 4,000 supporters waving banners were moving up one of Jakarta's main streets, snarling traffic and raising the threat of clashes with heavily-armed police and soldiers at the parliament building, about two miles away.

Wahid's fanatical followers have already clashed with security forces in his stronghold of East Java province.

Indonesia's two major parliamentary parties earlier on Wednesday called for Wahid to face an impeachment hearing in the top legislature, expected by August. Parliament has yet to formalize that request -- JAKARTA (Reuters)
