The Palestinian leadership is outraged over an incident in which Israeli soldiers were filmed reciting a Jewish prayer inside a mosque in the occupied West Bank, calling it a "shameful desecration" and a provocation for a religious war.
The video showed troops using loudspeakers to chant the Shema Yisrael, a key prayer in Judaism, at a mosque in Jenin refugee camp.
Towards the end of the clip, laughter can be heard as troops walk outside the mosque and a Hanukkah song rings out from the loudspeaker.
The footage was apparently taken during a deadly Israeli raid in Jenin this week, which resulted in the deaths of 11 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
Palestinian presidency spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh condemned the soldiers' behaviour in a statement, saying it was "shameful and condemnable".
He warned that Israel was "dragging the region into a religious war" and that the world would suffer the consequences if it did not intervene to stop Israel's "crimes and violations" against the Palestinian people and their holy sites.
He urged the international community and the United States to "put pressure on Israel to stop its violations against Palestinian people, their property and their sanctities".
The Israeli army said it had removed the soldiers involved from operational duties and launched disciplinary procedures.
Army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the soldiers had acted "contrary to IDF (army) values" and that "steps will be taken accordingly".
The incident came amid ongoing the war in Gaza, where Israel has been bombing the enclave for weeks.
The Palestinian ministry said more than 100 mosques had been destroyed by Israeli strikes.
