An American soldier was killed during fighting in western Afghanistan that also left an Afghan dead on Sunday. U.S. troops came under fire from "enemy forces" while searching a compound near Shindand Airfield in Herat province, the military said.
The American was wounded and died later at the airfield. The Afghan died at the scene, the military said in a statement.
Neither was identified in the statement but a local "militia" commander said the Afghan was Mullah Dost, a former "militia leader" who owned the compound, The AP reported. Akhtar Mohammed Husseini also said Dost's wife was killed and two of their children were injured.
