US raid kills five in Baghdad as search goes on for missing soldier

Overnight U.S. raids in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City in Baghdad killed five and injured at least six people, witnesses and morgue officials said on Wednesday. According to Reuters, witnesses said aircraft launched strikes in the area.

 

One witness in Sadr City said American and Iraqi soldiers had conducted ground raids and air strikes on a Sadr office. A witness told Reuters two members of the Mehdi Army were among the dead.

 

It was not clear if there was any connection to the hunt for a U.S. soldier who went missing on Monday. An American of Iraqi descent, the missing soldier was last seen on Monday afternoon in the Green Zone, in uniform. A security cordon around the central Karrada district, where troops have been searching house-to-house since the U.S. soldier disappeared on Monday night, had been lifted on Wednesday.
