ALBAWABA- A police officer and a suspect were wounded during an active shooter incident Tuesday afternoon in northwest Baltimore, authorities said, after officers responding to a reported burglary came under fire from inside a residence.
According to the Baltimore Police Department, the incident unfolded in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue when officers were dispatched to investigate a possible burglary or barricade situation. During the response, a suspect in the home allegedly opened fire, striking one officer.
The wounded officer was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment. Police said the suspect was also injured during the exchange of gunfire, though authorities have not released further details about the individual’s identity or condition.
The scene is located near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue. Officials stressed, however, that the shooting occurred at a private residence and not at a synagogue or religious institution. Investigators said there is no indication the nearby Jewish community was targeted.
A Jewish community security organization also stated that there is no known active threat related to the incident and described it as likely domestic in nature. Police urged residents to avoid the area while officers secured the scene and continued their investigation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive or confirmed the circumstances that led to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident comes amid persistent concerns over gun violence in the United States. Data from the Gun Violence Archive shows several mass shootings, defined as incidents in which four or more people are shot, excluding the suspect, occurred in early March.
