U.S. President Barack Obama announced Thursday that Washington was ready to take "targeted" and "precise" military action in Iraq, according to Agence France Presse.

Obama said that military action may be implemented "if necessary" to combat Sunni militants operating within Iraq.

Obama also added that the White House is prepared to send up to 300 military advisors to Iraq in order to train and provide equipment to Iraqi forces.

Washington has also already increased its surveillence and intelligence activities in the country as well, the president added.

Obama's commentary comes in response to Baghdad's appeal earlier this week requesting that the U.S. strike Sunni militant strongholds throughout the country after the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) gained control of one of the country's major cities, Mosul, as well as Iraq's main oil refinery.
