ALBAWABA -A U.S. military's Central Command revealed in a statement that an American Navy F/A-18 fighter jet was shot down over the Red Sea on Saturday.

It noted that the incident took place "apparently" as a result of friendly fire.

The Central Command also added that the jet's two pilots safely ejected from the F/A-18 and were recovered safely, however, one of them experienced minor injuries.

The statement also read that the F/A-18 was operating from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier when it was "mistakenly fired upon by the USS Gettysburg". The USS Gettysburg, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser, is part of the Truman carrier strike group, which entered Middle Eastern waters a week ago.

The friendly fire incident comes on the same day that the US carried out airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, hitting a missile storage facility and a command and control facility in the capital, Sanaa.

During the attacks, the United States also shot down one-way attack drones and an anti-ship cruise missile, according to US Central Command.
