The United States is quietly expressing concern over the Iranian military buildup in the Gulf, according to Middle East News Line (MENL). Meanwhile, Iran has moved forward in completing a nuclear reactor.

According to the report, the concern is being expressed by US military officials responsible for security of Washington's allies in the Gulf. They said Iran's plans to purchase advanced weapons from Russia could change the balance of power in the region.

Gen. Tommy Franks, the commander-in-chief of Centcom, listed Iranian military capabilities in the Gulf during recent testimony in the House Armed Services Committee. Franks was quoted by MENL as saying Teheran has deployed fast attack naval craft, anti-ship missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles.

In addition, Franks said, Teheran has completed hardened facilities to protect their surface-to-surface missiles and launchers and improved their command and control systems.

"Teheran's ability to interdict the Strait of Hormuz with air, surface and sub-surface naval units, as well as mines and missiles remains a concern," Franks said. "Additionally, Iran's asymmetrical capabilities are becoming more robust."

In a separate report by MENL, the news service said that Iran has achieved another milestone in efforts to complete a nuclear reactor at Bushehr.

Iranian officials were quoted as saying that foundations for a steam power generator were laid at the Bushehr nuclear plant. The plant is being constructed by Russia in a $800 million project. The nuclear plant is regarded as the basis of Iran's plans to develop nuclear weapons.

A ceremony for the laying of the foundations was held at Bushehr on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Iranian parliamentarians and senior officials, said the report – Albawaba.com
