The United States on Saturday will commission the USS Winston Churchill, which will become the only active US warship named for a foreign national, a Navy spokeswoman said.

"It is the only active US warship named after a foreign national right now," Lieutenant Barbara Burfeind said of the guided missile destroyer, DDG-81, set for commissioning in Norfolk, Virginia.

Churchill is the fifth Briton and the 16th foreign national for whom a US warship has been named, but the others are not currently in service, the spokeswoman said.
