ALBAWABA - The United States carried out airstrikes in Somalia's Golis mountains killing key leaders in the Islamic Group (ISIS), AFP reported citing the government of Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region.
The attack was first reported by President Donald Trump who posted on his official social media Truth Social. He wrote that he directed "precision military air strikes on the senior ISIS attack planner and other terrorists" in Somalia.
"Recent airstrikes have led to the neutralization of key figures within ISIS, marking a significant advancement as we progress into the second phase of our operation," the regional government revealed Sunday.
In addition, the Somali government in Mogadishu revealed that the operation in the Bari region was "jointly coordinated" by the Somali and US governments and had struck "senior IS leaders".
Following the post by Donald Trump, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud posted on X expressing "deepest gratitude" following the airstrike by Washington and defended their fight "against terrorism."
He said on X: "Terrorism will neither find friends, nor any place to call home, in Puntland state and entire Somalia."
