Hamas made a strong showing in local Palestinian elections in 26 communities across the West Bank on Thursday, according to unofficial results.
According to results obtained by the Associated Press, the ruling Fatah movement won a majority in 14 towns, while Hamas took control in nine communities. In two, a joint Hamas-Fatah slate won.
However, Hamas sources said they had won a majority in at least 17 local councils, based on reports from their election observers. A Hamas spokesman in Gaza Strip, Sami Abu Zuhri, said the result was a reflection of strong support for his movement among Palestinians. Quarters close to Hamas have accused the PA of seeking to create an atmosphere favorable to Fatah by first organizing the elections in villages and smaller towns where the movement enjoys strong grass-root support.
